Accountability for Adam Bandt’s disrespect to the Australian National Flag
Adam Bandt is the elected Federal Member for Melbourne and Leader of the Australian Greens party.
Prior to his press conference in Sydney on Monday 20 June 2022, a member of his team removed the Australian National Flag, while the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags remained in view. Adam Bandt said the Australian National Flag was “hurtful” to Indigenous Australians and invoked racism.
“For many people, this flag (Australian National Flag) represents dispossession and the lingering pains of colonisation,” he said. “Through treaty with First Nations’ people and by moving to a republic, we can have a flag that represents all of us.” Adam Bandt said.
The Australian Army is the custodian of the Australian National Flag, and it is draped over the coffins of all Veterans who have died in service to Australia.
Adam Bandt’s actions have brought outrage from across the Veteran community and families calling for his immediate apology, and actions to be taken by the Government and/or the Governor-General to ensure that this disrespect is held accountable.
Thank you to those who signed the Petition.
We compiled the results taken from the petition and sent it off to a long list of Senators and Members of Parliament ahead of their first sitting in Canberra (July 2022).

The great irony is that aborigines enlisted in the armed forces esp during WW2 and fought under the Australian flag. They also served as coast watchers and were highly regarded for that service. In addition to violating his oath of office Bandt is displaying another facet of his bog ignorance.

I served in 7 RAR in Vietnam in 1970. The only disrespect exhibited here is the abuse directed at a recently re-elected member of our federal parliament. The outrage is confected.

I, like many others served this country under our National Flag, as a front line soldier for 33 years. I was wounded in action as a 20 year old conscript. I WAS LUCKY, I survived to complete my conscription and serve this Nation for a further 31 years. My mate was not so lucky, he was directly in front of me and was killed in action. When I rolled him over to assist him, he had a part jaw bone left! I could do nothing for him! I live with every day since 1968.

Darren you need to look at the history of Australia and stop looking through rose coloured glasses. Just WHAT has the AUSTRALIAN government done for our country? We are not even recognised by the Government as the Traditional Custodian’s of this Country. When my great grandfather and his brothers, cousins all fought in WW1, they were very proud to serve under the Australian Flag. Only my great grandfather returned home, he was not entitled to any of his pay, just sent back to the Mission like he was nothing. He felt ashamed my nanny told me. Sent out to work on non-Indigenous people’s land, and still not receiving his wages. When my great grandfather went home to his Dream Time, it took the RSL another 56 years to recognise him as a Veteran. I know that with good will some of the history that has been done in the past, people are trying to do the right thing. As an Aboriginal Woman, we have our own flag that identifies us, and we are proud of that flag. We are not all the same. I have current serving family members in the Defense Force, my husband is a Veteran of 27 years Army, and we support the flag, just as our forgotten Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Hero’s in our Dreamtime died for. Australia has a Black History and it has always been denied by the Government especially by the Libs! Am I upset that he did this…….if you were Aboriginal you would understand why he did it.

How dare this man decide that our Australian National Flag is ““hurtful to Indigenous Australians and invoked racism.” For some it might, however I know a large amount of Indigenous Australians and they are as proud of our flag as I am especially the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders that have been members of the ADF and police. Further more to above comments on our Aboriginal mates who served in the military under the Australian Flag, it is quite obvious Brandt is ignorant about Aboriginal/Australian history. i.e. Captain Reg Saunders was the first aboriginal to be commissioned in the field serving with the 2/6th Battalion of the 17th Brigade 6th Division. I myself served with him at Puckapunyal, Victoria. No soldier was conscious of the color of his skin as was he was an efficient and effective Officer who made us proud.
What worries me about Brandt is, who are the people who vote for him. Do we have a “5th column” being bred in Australia, just waiting for the right time to surface and destroy us. I hope our spy agencies are watching him and his friends closely.

This is the sort of thing that my brother in law talked about Australia’s Immediate threat was not from Indonesia but from within Australia- a civil war that will culminate around Indigenous affairs. I see that now with Adam Brandt using these issues to support the non indigenous people who want a republic. Public support like Centerlink and public housing, hospital and schools will be for the rich. Is this really what they want? I can only imagine that they are rubbing their hands to make a new constitution giving few people power like America. I was living in the Territory of Papua and see what lies and broken dreams were left behind after Australia gave Papua its so called independence. No I don’t like Adam Brandt and these are the big issues that need to be addressed. I wonder if he has ever lived on the flat islands of the Pacific -the world nes that are being swapped by salt water because as far as I know he has never been to my peoples island to look after them. So he has no ethics like the rest.
